Unless weakened\u00a0through misuse, environmental damage, or anomalies at the cellular level, to\u00a0name just a few exceptions, we are largely capable of overcoming most illness and damage. Sometimes we have to help, like splinting or casting a limb, providing stability and immobility while a bone heals, and sometimes we have to give the immune system a little help with an antibiotic, jumpstarting the process of overcoming the germ attack. Minor incidents like colds and flus, scrapes, bumps, bruises, for the most part, can be handled by our physiology without much intervention from outside the body.<\/p>\n<p>But not always.<\/p>\n<p>War, disease, birth defects, vehicle and industrial accidents, sports injuries, can all produce conditions that the body just can&#8217;t overcome. Medical science has made tremendous strides in assisting patients in living more normal lives through transplants and prosthetics, microsurgery and <span id=\"c7243d88-f695-4060-a6fb-fcb42286f9b0\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"8a2fdd6f-8a55-4273-b7a1-a65bbdbc7480\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"a002c38b-c922-4d49-b854-02ae282efa0d\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">superdrugs<\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u00a0and the advances have been exponential as we look through the history books. We&#8217;ve been anxiously anticipating the day when cancer is cured, when childhood diseases don&#8217;t rob\u00a0children of the joys of youth. We&#8217;re not there yet, but a recent giant leap in that direction may permit these miracles in our lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Part biology, part sculpture, the <span id=\"73269cff-ecb9-41f2-b832-98c32b1dfac6\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"63e4dafd-2bb6-4229-bf03-3abbdb3d0bc8\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"e2a0bd57-b844-4e3b-9244-bb6b97a32621\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"f82e8ba7-3854-4df4-a11e-c9a72dee2797\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">scientific medical<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> art of growing body parts has me in complete awe. Using the patient&#8217;s own tissue as a base, researchers provide a place and ideal conditions to allow the tissue to form a scaffold (think armature or mold for a paper mache sculpture). They use stem cells <span id=\"df44f9bc-6a17-4d50-8dde-c7f573cf8343\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"121db596-0f52-49b1-8a3f-bde725aea90e\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"452ae2e2-6add-4e73-b431-8e327f874535\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"44620a25-c928-4728-9251-7cc40185a73e\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">identical or<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0structurally similar to the ones from the damaged, diseased, or missing organ, from the patient himself. (I know you can see where this is going and why it&#8217;s so exciting). When the scaffold is mature enough, the cells are applied to it, appropriate to the organ, along with any other necessary substances, cells, or tissue to begin the growing process.<\/p>\n<p>The research results in the lab were\u00a0successful enough to lead to implementation in human cases. Bladders, ears, kidneys, tracheas, and female genitalia malformed through birth defects have been fully functional in application. \u00a0Researchers are experimenting with <span id=\"18fd7ad9-ca59-45ff-9a6f-eef753bf29d6\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"f0b7141a-3cc5-4eaa-a7bc-3b4e66475615\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"68fd85ac-4356-4807-b34d-f55c37d1680a\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">growth<\/span><\/span><\/span> of other parts as opportunity and need arises, and they have expressed confidence and cautious optimism in the future of this science and medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of the success of this effort \u00a0has me on the edge of my seat for several reasons. One of the most disappointing events for a transplant patient is when, after a <span id=\"23ef4c4d-248e-444e-8a97-9ba71e8dfa53\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"413dd4d6-5389-4c4b-8df1-a0ea6d07bf2f\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"8eb9da51-ce7e-453c-a377-8fea2c773659\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">months<\/span><\/span><\/span>-long or years-long wait for an appropriate organ, the body rejects the new organ; sees it as an intruder and attacks it. Because these new organs are made with the patient&#8217;s own <span id=\"fa10d709-4103-4ae0-8eca-066c2caba8a0\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"b8b2426e-0ee1-43f9-8e19-317b5cc0a7fd\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"ae871d1a-05c9-4177-810e-6e7189f11c21\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">organ tissue<\/span><\/span><\/span>, the research hasn&#8217;t evidenced any rejection of the &#8220;new&#8221; organs.<\/p>\n<p>Another huge plus for this research is that, although it uses stem cells, these are not the controversial embryonic stem cells recovered from aborted fetuses; these stem cells are from the patients themselves. To discuss image, please see Template talk:H\u00e4ggstr\u00f6m diagrams (Photo credit: Wikipedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, and this almost brings me to tears to think of it, it&#8217;s still the patient&#8217;s body, mending itself, with, admittedly, a great deal of assistance, but the truth here is that this is the body acting in partnership with itself and the researchers, and by extension, Science <span id=\"59f63280-090b-49d6-8acc-f8432bce31de\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"4d57b01b-bd67-472a-8f9d-8c19b303f108\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"5cafdec9-715c-4983-9c95-44aa279a4552\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">acting<\/span><\/span><\/span> in partnership with God to use what God created to work <span id=\"b5cf49d5-ed38-49f4-b6f3-af9f1405b9f1\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"4f578225-6e0a-499b-8781-a57ffb705479\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span id=\"15a55d28-bc7e-46c6-87fd-3759dd1c0665\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">in<\/span><\/span><\/span> its own behalf to\u00a0do what it can no longer, or could never, do in its own behalf.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m an organ donor, a blood donor, and a bone marrow donor, and I don&#8217;t think the needs for those products is going away anytime soon; this research still has years to go before it&#8217;s common practice.
